Launched in January 2007, the ‘mellow yellow’ science van has been taking science to learners across the Western Province.  The WCED Mobile Sciencentre is sponsored by the Western Cape Education Department and operated by the MTN Sciencentre. 

 It is a Mercedes high roof panel van packed with boxes of puzzles and other goodies of scientific intrigue.  Puzzles are compact and robust, and can be unpacked and spread out to accommodate a fairly large group of learners.  The contents of the van can be changed easily to suit special requests or venue limitations.  During a typical school visit, the hands-on puzzles are supplemented with science shows and demonstrations.

 The WCED Mobile Sciencentre’s main targets are grade 9 & 10 learners of the 43 Dinaledi schools in the Western Cape, but other maths, science and technology schools as well as primary schools are accommodated.  It is also a regular visitor to science festivals, school festivals, the kite festival, expos, fairs, youth indabas and more.
